Can someone tell me what a firewire is? or the descrption of it thanks?

Yeah, FireWire is the name Apple Computer uses for the IEEE 1394 communication protocol. However, you'll find this same port on most video cameras and many non-Apple computers. For example, Sony calls its implementation "iLink". FireWire 800 transfers data at about 800Mbps, while USB 2.0 can only manage 480Mbps.

This extra speed is valuable for high end audio video applications, and for external hard drives, but USB 2.0 devices are cheaper, and are therefore much more common for less expensive devices such as Apple's own iPod.

So, if you're looking at digital video cameras, I'd strongly recommend buying one with IEEE 1394 support, but if you just want to move MP3 files around, you can get way with USB2.0.

big bang........followed by lots of pretty lights in the sky.....ok ok calm down......i had my contacts out........i thought it said firework!!!!!!!!

Firewire is a technical specification for hardware manufacturing.
It's the name they put to "USB for Macs" ;)

Cheers.

firewire was a big deal when USB 1.0 came out. It was many times faster. However, now that USB 2.0 is on the market, Firewire is really just a different size plug for various gadgets. Today, mostly just camcorders, and mostly on the Apple Mac side of the fence. hope that helps.

Another method of connecting external devices to your computer. Much like a USB port, only you will need a firewire port/card to connect firewire devices.
